Myths have always chased hypnosis and its therapeutic arm, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Some of the common myths associated with hypnosis and the reality behind them are discussed here.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It hinges more on the science of psychology and is very easy to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants effectively undergoing it in public shows. They hold that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the charms of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on around him. That person is just in a relaxed state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can accept suggestions easily.

Another myth, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. Researchers have come up with this low result because they have used the same hypnosis technique on all people without focusing on their individual natures. People differ in their characters and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis methods to suit the temperaments of different people.

People also tend to equate hypnosis to meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, while communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not correct. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, while the very basis of the hypnosis method is communication.

Another misconception is that physical and behavioural changes in an individual are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. But it can bring about a development in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a happy and fulfilling life, and therefore one must not pay attention to the myths, and go for hypnotic sessions with an open mind.
