Diabetes is a disease due to high sugar level in the blood stream. The symptoms of diabetes appear slowly in an individual and most of the times it makes difficult to recognize diabetes. Diabetes is caused when there is low amount of insulin in the body.
Insulin is a hormone secreted by pancreas. Pancreas consists of group of cells which are collectively known as islet of langerhans. Among which beta cells of pancreas are responsible for secretion of insulin.
There are three main types of diabetes. Type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is more in young adults. So it is also known by the name Juvenile diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the body stops secreting insulin or insulin production is very little.
The patients with type 1 diabetes need to inject insulin doses, Insulin is a must dose over here so it also known by the name insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
The type 2 diabetes is second type of diabetes which usually occurs in adults. Adults above 40 plus age are more victims of it. So it is also known as adult onset diabetes. This type of diabetes is due to pancreas not making sufficient insulin to maintain blood sugar level normal.
The most common diabetes signs and symptoms are :
Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Unclear vision
Increased appetite
Poor wound healing
Impotence in men
The other major kind of diabetes is gestational diabetes which is to women during second half of pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes have a risk of having large babies. In ignored cases of gestational diabetes it leads to type 2 diabetes.
Among the major reasons of diabetes diet is one. Diabetic people should have well balanced diet. Diet should be rich in fiber. Low in simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates should be replaced by complex carbohydrates. Examples of fruits and vegetables rich in fiber are broccoli, peas, beans, apricot, apple, dates.
The other main cause of diabetes is changes in lifestyle. Sedentary kind of lifestyle leads to diabetes. Diabetic people need to involve in physical activities. Examples of physical activities are running, skipping, swimming. The other major advantages of exercises are good blood circulation. It also makes a person active and look healthy.
